Slabs Rocking or Sitting in a Puddle? Winter Shows What Is Underneath
Rocking slabs, a sunken corner or water running at the house? Paving fails from underneath. How John lifts and relays it in East Ayrshire.
Advice from John
Paving that sinks was not laid wrong on the top. It was laid wrong underneath.
The wet months are when that shows: a slab that rocks when you step on it, a corner sitting in a puddle, or rain running towards the back door instead of away from it.

Most of a patio is the part you never see
A patio, a path or a drive is mostly the bit underneath: the dig out, the sub-base, and the fall that takes water away from your house. Get that right and it sits flat for years. Get it wrong and it is rocking by the second winter.
What people call John about
- Slabs rocking underfoot, or one corner sunk into a puddle
- Monoblock rutted where the car sits, or spreading at the edges
- Water running towards the house instead of away from it
- A drive dropped where an old trench was backfilled
- Paving that is more green than grey and slippy in the winter
- A new patio for the back door, or a path down the side of the house
You may not need new slabs
If your paving only needs lifted and relaid rather than replaced, John will say so. As long as the slabs are sound, they come up, the base gets put right, and they go back down level. It looks the same as a new patio, and you are not paying for new slabs.
How the job goes
- LookLevels, falls and where the water needs to go. The look is free, and it comes before any price.
- DigOut to depth, with a proper compacted sub-base. That is the part that does the work.
- LaySlabs or blocks laid to the fall, edges restrained, joints filled.
- ClearSpoil and old paving taken away. Breaking out and clearing is part of the job, not an extra you find out about at the end.
Most domestic patios are a two to four day job, depending on size and access. John gives you the days along with the price, once he has seen it.
Green and slippy, but sound?
Not every tired patio needs lifted. If the slabs are level and only green or black after a few wet Ayrshire winters, a power wash at the right pressure brings them back, and monoblock is rejointed with kiln-dried sand afterwards. Green growth on a path is genuinely slippy in the winter, so it is worth doing before the frost. See power washing.
Weeds and drives
Weeds come through monoblock far less if the base and the jointing sand are done properly. For most domestic drives in Scotland you do not need planning permission, but somewhere for the water to go is the usual expectation. If your job looks like one to check with the council first, John will flag it.
