Walls, Repairs & Pointing in Galston & across East Ayrshire

Frost gets into an open joint, water freezes, and the wall does the rest itself.

Ayrshire has a lot of old stone and red sandstone walls, and a lot of them are held together by mortar that went in a long time ago. Once the pointing goes, water sits in the joints, freezes, and pushes the wall apart from the inside.

John rebuilds garden walls, resets copes that have come loose, and rakes out and repoints joints that have failed. Small brickwork repairs round the house too — a bit of a wall taken out for a new door or a vent, and made good after.

What to look for

  • Mortar you can pick out of the joints with your fingers
  • Cope stones rocking or already off along the top of a wall
  • A bulge or a lean in a garden wall
  • A section already down after a car or a gale caught it
  • Green staining and permanent damp on one face of the wall
  • Gaps round a vent, a pipe or an old opening that need made good

What it costs

Priced after a look. Pointing is priced by the area of wall; a rebuild is priced by what has to come down and go back up.

A note worth having: on old sandstone, hard modern cement pointing can do more harm than the open joint did, because it traps water in the stone. John will point out where that has already been done to your wall.

Common questions

Can a leaning wall be saved, or does it need rebuilt?

It depends how far it has gone and what is under it. A slight lean in a sound wall can often be left and pointed; a bulge usually means it has come apart internally and that section needs rebuilt.

How long does repointing last?

Done properly on a garden wall, decades. The failures that come back quickly are almost always a skim of mortar smeared over old joints instead of the joints being raked out first.

Do you match old stone?

As close as he can get. On red sandstone and old rubble walls a perfect match does not exist, but a sympathetic one does and it weathers in.

Do you do walls inside the house?

Small making-good, yes. Anything structural inside — removing a load bearing wall, for example — needs a building warrant and a structural engineer, and he will tell you that.

My wall is on the boundary. Does that matter?

It can. Boundary and mutual walls are shared responsibility, so it is worth agreeing it with the neighbour before the work starts.
