Your local handyman in Mauchline
Mauchline has a lot of old red sandstone, and old sandstone has its own list of jobs.
Mauchline is a historic Ayrshire village — Burns country, and built largely from the red sandstone quarried around it. Handsome buildings, and buildings that need looking after, because sandstone and lime mortar do not behave like modern brick and cement.
Around the old core there is a good deal of newer housing with ordinary modern gardens, so John’s work here splits fairly evenly between careful repairs on older property and straightforward garden and fencing work.
The jobs that come up in Mauchline
- Repointing on red sandstone walls where the mortar has weathered out
- Cope stones rebedded on garden and boundary walls
- Gutters and downpipes on older, taller stone property
- Roof repairs — slipped slates, ridge mortar and flashings
- Fencing, slabbing and turfing on the newer housing round the village
- Garden clearances and tidy ups, including properties being sold or let

Common questions about Mauchline
Do you cover Mauchline?
Yes. It is a normal part of the working area, not an out-of-area job.
Is cement pointing bad for old sandstone?
It can genuinely do harm. Hard cement traps water in soft stone instead of letting it breathe out through the joint, and the stone erodes instead of the mortar. John will point out where that has already been done to your wall and what it is doing.
Do you work on listed or historic property?
Ordinary maintenance, yes. Anything that needs listed building consent is a conversation with East Ayrshire Council first, and John will tell you when your job is one of those.
Is there a call-out charge?
No. Free look, free price, every time.
Need a hand in Mauchline?
Give John a phone, or send a photo of the job on WhatsApp. He will come and look at it and tell you what it costs, and both of those are free.
