Decking lives or dies on the frame underneath and on how much air can get under it.
A deck that is bouncy, soft in places or greasy in the winter is usually telling you about the joists, the spacing or the drainage — not just the boards on top.

What it costs
Priced after a look. A deck across a level garden and a deck on posts down a slope are very different amounts of work even at the same square metres.
If the frame is sound and only the boards have gone, a re-board is a lot cheaper than a new deck — and John will tell you when that is what you are looking at.
Common questions
Is my deck worth saving?
If the joists and posts are solid it usually is, and re-boarding costs a fraction of starting again. If the frame is rotten, patching the top is money away and he will say so.
How do you stop it going green?
Air and water are the whole story — proper gaps between boards, decent airflow underneath, and not letting leaves sit on it all winter. A wash and a treatment on top of that keeps it right.
Can you build decking on a slope?
Yes, on posts. It is more work than a flat garden and the price reflects that, but it is often the only way to get usable space out of a sloping back garden.
Composite or timber?
Timber costs less to put down and needs looking after. Composite costs more and mostly does not. John will fit either — tell him which way you are leaning and he will be straight about the trade-off.
Do you take the old decking away?
Yes. It comes up and it goes in the van.
